Thanks and an Apology
Hi everyone!

I realize that a lot of people were dissatisfied with the ending, and I've recieved a few emails myself, so I've typed a lengthy reply that I thought should clear up any vague notions on why the webcomic ended the way it did.

First of all, I have to apologize for your feeling unsatisfactory for the story of Honeysyn. Our intention was just to finish telling their stories as completely as we can and how we wanted to. While we originally did plan more for Sam and Erik, we decided that most of that was unnecessary in favor of portraying the sort of tense, uncomfortable relationship they had. Their story was decidedly darker and harder to follow than Josh and May's, and it's unfortunate that the change tone and atmosphere turned off much of the readers. While we did try to keep their story from being completely obvious, we hadn't meant to make it confusing, and we thought that we had revealed enough of their story and and motives from the pieces for an attentive reader to piece their backstory together.

As for Jay and Charles, we had ended this couple how we had meant to. Originally they were to meant to end ambiguously, but on an optimistic note, but upon requests that they recieve a more "complete" ending, we decided that they honestly wouldn't work out as a couple and left it at that.

The reason that HoneySyn is ending is very simple, really. The money that we make from the books is woefully insufficient for anything more than to print more books, so that really just leaves one reason on why we create this comic: for fun. We create the webcomic for fun, as a hobby, because we want to. While we have enjoyed the process thus far, we made an unwise move in continuing the story past chapter 5, when all we really had to go on were a few vague storylines and a couple that didn't really work. So we used that story to introduce more characters, continued that way instead and finished that story as much as we planned it. Unfortunately, somewhere along the way I (Nuu) realized that I no longer liked the story. I no longer liked any of the characters (this includes Josh, May, Charles and Jay), and I no longer wanted to tell a story involving them. However, I have made a commitment by starting a new storyline, and I had an obligation to complete it. I have done that, and now I will be moving on to creating a new story, one that I'm creating because I like it, as opposed to because I'm obliged to or because the readers demanded it.

At this point, all we can really do is apologize that you didn't like our webcomic. At the same time, we're glad that you are so critical of it, since the criticism you have given us shows that you cared, and the high expectations shows that you compare us to professionals working in the field rather than to other amatures creating webcomics. Thanks for all your support, and we hope that one day you will find it in yourself to check out some of the other projects we've been working on.

So, to reiterate (for anyone who didn't want to read that all 'o text), a huge thank-you everyone for the support in the past few years, we're really sorry that the story ended so strangely, and we hope that you'll check out the new projects we'll be working on, that hopefully won't end so strangely! But no real guarantees, since we have the strangest muses ever...

Also: I'm not sure how to tag this entry...

While I do admit I was dissatisfied with the way things ended, I do understand the reason behind it, and of course, understand that you were doing it for fun. If it's no longer fun for you, we, as a fanbase, have to respect that regardless of what we think.

I can't speak for everyone here when I say this, but good luck with your new story (I'll be reading it :D), and thank you for sharing Honeydew Syndrome with us. ♥

Yeah, likewise, but I have high hopes for your new stories.

That and I'm buying the second volume of HoneySyn.

The good thing about leaving it at where you are, at least it gives more opening for fanfic :D

I wasn't particularly satisfied with the end, but I cringe reading "didn't like" -- I loved HoneySyn! It had its flaws, yes, and I blathered enough elsewhere about my specific criticisms of the end of the Charles/Jay plot in particular, but I would never go so far as to say that any of it ruined the comic for me. It was still beautifully rendered and a great deal of fun -- which, as you say, is the whole point. :)

And you're right: the very fact that so many people got so fired up just shows you how passionately committed everyone was to the story on the whole. My hope is also that, if we can sit down and pinpoint "This worked for me, and this didn't," we can apply those conclusions to our own creative efforts in the future, and we, the fans, can learn something from the whole experience. ^^

...wow, I'm a sap. XD

I completely second everything tierfal said. I can't think of any more to say other than more power to you guys for sticking through it to the end and finishing, even though HoneySyn lost its luster for you. So many webcomic artists and authors will just drop a comic if they dislike it, but I seriously respect you for keeping on. I still adore HoneySyn, even if I wasn't entirely fond of the ending, and I'll more than likely read it all over again several times. I'll still recommend it to the few friends I have who *still* haven't heard of it, and I'll definitely stalk your future comics. [/Nods sagely]

...Okay, so maybe I did have more to say. >.>

I was completely satisfied by the ending.
Because i think the stories were told in an imaginative fashion and throughly made me want to read over a fews of times and really analyze your pages.
When you think about it, its never the end because as a reader/fan i feel free to think about how things could have progressed and comics like that give me a great deal of joy.
I will be checking out your new projects for sure and wish you the best of luck xx

:) Thanks for everything. I have to say I'm very satisfied with HoneySyn. At some points, it didn't really feel like a whole piece but rather several seperate stories and so my attention kinda drifted. The newer characters (or relationships) could never really capture my heart quite as much as Josh and May, but I appreciate getting to see more characters (as well as learn more about Charles and Jay.)

Thanks again. I'm truly looking forward to both your future joint and individual projects!

Hey! I just wanted to say what an excellent comic! I've been following it for a while now, and even though I am unsatisfied with the ending, it does...work somehow. I feel that it leaves alot open which I think is a good thing :) it leaves to the imagination!
ldkirbyldkirby on June 19th, 2009 01:56 am (UTC)
I pretty much agree with everyone else. While I was a little dissatisfied by the ending, I completely understand that working on a project you're no longer interested is pretty much pointless, and I really respect the fact that you even finished the storyline you were on. Most webcomics are left unfinished in some form or on permanent hiatus, and I appreciate the effort you went to to finish up the story.

And even if the ending wasn't my favorite part, I still enjoyed HoneySyn a lot, and I can't wait to see what you guys come up with for Two Keys, it looks like it's gonna be bomb.

I don't think you needed to apologize. this was your work, and you can do whatever you want with it. I loved it and I'm really glad you let the story continue as far as it did. all we can do is thank you for sharing and hope you'll let us read your next work! :)

I'm sad that you ended up hateing your characters, but the ending did seem happhazard. I got to "The End" and was like, "What? But I don't understand anything that happened. What's going on?"

In the future, you now know that when the story ends, it ends. Leave the rest to fan art and fan fiction, I say.

And I am looking forward to Two Keys. I hope it's just as good, if not better, than HoneySyn. :D

I'm not going to lie, while I loved the entire series, the ending was too sudden, and that it needed at least an epilogue. However, it is your story, an working on something you do not enjoy anymore, is a pain in the ass.

Don't apologize, it is your story! Thank you for such an amazing story :D Looking forward to your new projects!

PS: I am so glad that Charles and Jay did not end up together! They totally did not work.
Jay McNear: FEAR ITfanged_ferret on June 19th, 2009 04:09 am (UTC)
Well, I suppose this is an appropriate place for me to leave my comments, but first I would like to say; that I am so thankful to you guys for creating this. Although I fully agree that it should have ended at chapter five; I really enjoyed the extra peek into Jay's life, because he's a sweetie and I love him.

I'm fully interested in all of your other projects because you are talented individuals, and although Honeysyn lost a lot of it's appeal to me at the end I hope that it becomes just a shining and happy cornerstone to the beginnings of your careers. Please, don't let anybody's nay-saying mar it's finer points. It would stink if Honeysyn ever became something negative.

I'm so happy to have read Honeydew Syndrome, and I wish you well in your other endeavors. I'm really looking forward to them.

Also: Nuu. I love you, I love your Apollo Justice stuff. It's SO COOL.

I can't add much more than what has been said. I just wanted you to know that I loved honeysyn because it was a really good work on the drawing, on the way of writing the story... everything and I enjoyed it very much. Also I know I can speak for some of my non-lj friends, who read the comic and liked it as much as I did.

So, thank you and Schumie for everything and I'm looking forward to read the projects you're working on :).

Ohman! Who cares? I loved your comic form beginning to end. Thankyou for finishing it (at least for letting us know it was finished). And yeah. I wanted to see more from Josh and Metis, but whatever. You did a splendid work!

Thankyou for sharing.
akitronakitron on June 20th, 2009 02:54 am (UTC)
it may have been a fairly ambiguous storyline, but I thought it was great. That and even though Jay and Charles didn't get together, that's not a big deal. It's more realistic, I thought.
In any case, though personally I'd have liked more Metis/Josh, but you know whatever. I enjoyed it and look forward to your next comic!

I must confess that I was one of the people that was unsatisfied with the ending, but with your post, I find myself a little more understanding as to why it ended the way it did.

An author/artist's worst nightmare is when they lose interest in their characters. I glad that at least your ended it all instead of simply saying "discontinued." (Those evil fanfiction writers...*growls*)

*coughs* Anyways, looking forward to your new series! *bounces excitedly* It's going to be slash, right? Hook us a link when you start!

I enjoyed the ending actually! I was actually kind of expecting a tragically sad ending [which would have been okay] but then I would have been sad that it ended sad LOL. So all in all, good ending/webcomic!

Will you guys be printing volume 2 of the comic?
onionhead: charlesxmetis!onionheeeeeeead on June 20th, 2009 09:50 pm (UTC)
I almost started hardcore sobbing that it was over. I've followed Honeysyn for years. It used to be that every saturday, I'd have a sleepover with my friend Emily and we'd scream IT'S SATURDAY! whenever we realized it was saturday and that there would be an update. No matter where we were. Even if we were in the middle of a test. IT'S SATURDAY! It wasn't so much obsession, just a hardcore love.
I've followed honeysyn, quoted it, wrote fanfic for it, attempted to draw the characters, printed out pages and put them on my wall, and everything else a good fangirl would do. If I didn't have such a huge chest and looked like such a girl, I would've cosplayed in a heartbeat. I'd still love to cosplay Odette.
So thank you. Thanks for this wonderful little story. Oddly enough, seeing it inspired me, and made me think a lot about my own character (Not any made up thing, but myself), and it gave me hope.
I hope that one day my Josh will kiss me on the forehead. I also hope that one day I can draw as well as you can.
To wrap this up, I loved Honeysyn like a fat kid loved cake. Thanks for a fantastic comic. Whoo!
Jenjinsunpyo_18 on July 20th, 2009 02:02 am (UTC)
I enthusiastically second everything you just said, with the exception that despite my asian heritage and medium sized chest, I *have* cosplayed the characters. XD
Someday we'll all meet and have a reunion that's not quite a reunion (most of us having never met), we'll quote the comic, and fangasm and squee and make odd gurgling noises in our throats to simulate keyboard mash, and revive the love for honeydew syndrome that lies dormant in our hearts.
Honeydew Syndrome + Autobrig > expectations.

HoneySyn was the first thing I ever made fan art for in a long time. Swear. And reading was such a pleasure. The witty banter and the characters were very engaging and I enjoyed every single page.

As a C/J supporter, I was a little disappointed about the lack of closure but I agree there are some things better left to the imagination. Not all relationships work out in the end, after all. Or not all relationships start out as smoothly.

So THANK YOU for making something beautiful. You two have definitely grown while making this. May it be a stepping stone to something greater.♥ I'll be looking forward to Two Keys.
shin_yukishin_yuki on June 23rd, 2009 07:12 pm (UTC)
thank you so much for creating such a wonderful story with amazing art! I myself was a bit shocked at the ending (literally I went speechless) but that was only because this was a story I loved so much that I was sad to see it end. I anticipated every week a new page of honeysyn with excitement. It's heartbreaking to see it end since your characters and story have integrated so much into my life. I felt the ending was a bit abrupt but I understand the reason to end there. I just want to thank you for all those great pages and those great characters. I'm sure I'll be rereading the past chapters and drawing fanart still in the future.
rebukebulletrebukebullet on July 22nd, 2009 11:55 am (UTC)
The ending was more of "whooa, where did the ending come from" than dissatisfactory. The whole stroy, though - I loved it all, even the way Charles treated Jay. One, because otherwise it just wouldn't be Charles, two, it just creates opportunities for fandom, rite?
